{"id":1082,"date":"2017-03-09T19:20:46","date_gmt":"2017-03-10T00:20:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wildcorvid.org\/blog\/?p=1082"},"modified":"2017-03-09T19:20:46","modified_gmt":"2017-03-10T00:20:46","slug":"creature-feature-2017-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wildcorvid.org\/blog\/creature-feature-2017-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Creature Feature 2017 #2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of my familiars stops by the back yard (where the food is, of course):<br \/>\n<A HREF=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/SAdNz6\"><IMG SRC=\"http:\/\/wildcorvid.org\/media\/IMGP7502_0030_tn.jpg\"><\/A><\/p>\n<p>The Ospreys were very active, cavorting in the air and working on their nest on top of the intake structure:<br \/>\n<A HREF=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/SxNgvJ\"><IMG SRC=\"http:\/\/wildcorvid.org\/media\/IMGP7595_0014_tn.jpg\"><\/A><br \/>\nThis is kind of interesting because it shows how their tip flight feathers splay and curve up to act as [what human aircraft designers call] <A HREF=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wingtip_device\">winglets<\/A>:<br \/>\n<A HREF=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/SxNhYJ\"><IMG SRC=\"http:\/\/wildcorvid.org\/media\/IMGP7573_0016_tn.jpg\"><\/A><br \/>\nOf course, Osprey were using winglets long before humans produced the first inkling of aerodynamic lift.<\/p>\n<p>Got a good look at this Heron from across a little inlet, who also got a good look at me, naturally:<br \/>\n<A HREF=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/SHUGrh\"><IMG SRC=\"http:\/\/wildcorvid.org\/media\/IMGP7620_0012_tn.jpg\"><\/A><br \/>\nA bit later, paddling out of the inlet, I reached for my camera to get a few more pictures of the Ospreys overhead, when I heard a <em>floof floof floof<\/em> right behind my starboard side. The heron passed within a paddle&#8217;s-length of me.<br \/>\n<A HREF=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/RxyiUt\"><IMG SRC=\"http:\/\/wildcorvid.org\/media\/IMGP7647_0005_tn.jpg\"><\/A><\/p>\n<p>Ducks were hangin&#8217; out:<br \/>\n<A HREF=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/SAdwgp\"><IMG SRC=\"http:\/\/wildcorvid.org\/media\/IMGP7675_0004_tn.jpg\"><\/A><br \/>\nand it was a good day for the Turtles to be out getting some sun:<br \/>\n<A HREF=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/ScGnSw\"><IMG SRC=\"http:\/\/wildcorvid.org\/media\/IMGP7685_0003_tn.jpg\"><\/A><\/p>\n<p>Whenever I&#8217;ve become very familiar seeing something from one angle, like the spillway from the lake side:<br \/>\n<A HREF=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/SMw5Ue\"><IMG SRC=\"http:\/\/wildcorvid.org\/media\/IMGP7524_0024_tn.jpg\"><\/A><br \/>\nI always find it interesting when I suddenly get a look at it from the other side. I was wandering around the Lake Rabon park below the dam when I suddenly realized &#8220;OH&#8230; This is where the spillway spills out!&#8221;:<br \/>\n<A HREF=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/SHUY7A\"><IMG SRC=\"http:\/\/wildcorvid.org\/media\/IMG_20170304_132434435_tn.jpg\"><\/A><br \/>\nIt didn&#8217;t look like it had been used in a long time.
